Cardio Pulmonary Resuscitation
CPR Basic Life Support for Healthcare Providers:
This CPR with Automatic External Defibrillation (AED) training course is for those who are healthcare providers or who intend to enter the healthcare profession. This class is a prerequisite to a number of medical programs at the school. Course content includes Adult, Child and Infant CPR as well as AED use. This course is not a substitute for AED training that you would receive at a place where you volunteer or work; however, it is a good introduction.
The American Heart Association strongly promotes knowledge and proficiency in
BLS, ALCS and PALS and has developed instructional materials for this purpose.
Use of these materials in an educational course does not represent course sponsorship by the American Heart Association. Any fees charged for such a course,
except for a portion of fees needed for AHA course material, does not represent
income to the Association.
All students must have the current appropriate AHA course book available to them
for study before, during and after the course. Students are expected to have studied the manual prior to the class. The appropriate course book is available for
purchase in the student store.
Course completion certificates will not be issued the same day of the class and
are mailed out or available for pick up at a later date. Proficiency in course objectives is required for course completion. If proficiency is not reached by the end of the course or during remediation a course completion certificate will not be issued.
Prerequisite for all AHA classes offered at the school: read, speak and write English. Additional prerequisites for some classes listed above. All AHA courses are subject to cancellation one week prior to the class if minimum enrollment is not met.
EMT Basic, EMT Refresher and EMT Skills
Emergency Medical Technician Basic: (EMT-B)

This program requires student dedication and a significant amount of self study in addition to the classroom and clinical hours. Minimum hours of attendance must be maintained to be eligible to complete the class and there are very few classroom hours that may be missed in order to maintain eligibility. This class covers Principles, Concepts, Theories and Skills in Prehospital care at the Basic Life Support level. Students who successfully complete the course will be eligible to take the National Registry exam, the written portion of which is an online exam as of January 2007. The National Registry exam is the current certifying exam for the State of California and its Counties. Successful completion of the class and the certifying exam are only parts of the certification process with the State of California and the County of Ventura. Prerequisites: age 18 by scheduled completion date for the class; current Healthcare Provider CPR card prior to and throughout the duration of the class. The current accepted Healthcare provider CPR cards are AHA BLS for Healthcare Providers or
ARC CPR for the Professional Rescuer; read, speak and write English.
Recommendations: be able to read and write at the 10th grade level and above;
have basic knowledge of word processing and windows programs; good physical
condition; current physical exam and immunizations, required prior to clinical portion
of the class.
Disclaimers: current vaccinations, tests and physical are required for the clinical portion of the class. These immunizations, tests and physicals will be outlined further during orientation and the first few weeks of the class. Any expense required to meet the requirements will be the student’s own responsibility. Minimum
requirements are a current physical including a release from your physician saying
that you are fit for the clinical phase of the program, tetnus, Hepatitis B, MMR
(measles, mumps & rubella) vaccinations and a current PPD (Tuberculosis test or
XRAY.) Additional requirements may occur due to contractual obligations. Those
requirements will then need to be met and the student will be responsible for any
expense.
All applicants for initial certification with the County and the State and any applicant who has an expired certification are subject to a background check by the
Department of Justice. “If you are on probation or have been convicted of anything
other than a minor traffic violation, you must submit copies of your court documents
and a statement explaining the circumstances surrounding the arrest and conviction when applying for certification” with the Ventura County Emergency Medical Services Agency. For additional information related to this requirement of the Agency please refer to the Ventura County Emergency Medical Services Agency Policy # 333 and/or contact the Agency.
Emergency Medical Technician-Basic (EMT-B)
Refresher
This three or four day class meets the 24 hour classroom refresher requirement and the skills refresher requirement for the State of California and its Counties as well as portions of the National Registry’s reregistration requirements for Emergency Medical Technician Basics. There may be additional requirements to be eligible for recertification or to reregister if your certification has lapsed; or depending on the County and State of your certification. Note: Skills completion certificates are only valid for 12 months or as allowed by the ruling regulatory agency or authority. All students must bring a copy of their current or most recent EMT certification card and a current Healthcare providers level CPR card to the class for the instructor.
If you are interested in skills testing only, you may enroll for skills only which will take place on the last day of the refresher. Skills practice will be at the discretion of the instructor. If offered it may be the same day prior to testing or the second to last day of the refresher. You will need to check back with the school for times and availability.
If you are interested in renewing your CPR at the same time, you may elect to add the CPR renewal component. In order to add the CPR component you will need to enroll in the CPR renewal course at the same time as you enroll for the Skills or complete refresher class. You will then need to follow the steps as described in the catalog for the CPR renewal class and then bring the online completion form to skills testing for the instructor.
Intravenous Therapy & Blood Withdrawal
Open to currently licensed nurses and adult school vocational nursing graduates. Course covers current techniques of IV therapy, electrolyte balance and blood withdrawal. PsychTechs and RNs may not use this course for continuing education credit. LVNs will receive 30 contact hours upon successful course completion, BRN provider #00849. If applicable, please bring license to first class meeting.
Insurance Clerk/Medical Insurance Billing
(3415)(066515): One semester course covers medicolegal issues, handling source documents in the physician’s office, documentation and the medical record, diagnostic (ICD-9-CM) and procedure (CPT/HCPCS II) coding, working knowledge of basic insurance programs, processing the standard health insurance claim form (CMS-1500), operations and types of managed care systems, the authorization process, ledger transactions, tracing claims, tracking reimbursement, and an introduction to computerized insurance billing. Employment opportunities: physician, chiropractic, and physical therapy offices; billing services; clinics, other outpatient facilities; health maintenance organizations, insurance companies. Medical Assistant/Front & Back Office/Day
Medical Administrative Assistant (3344, 3110)(063512,063612). Class includes externship. Program includes front office administrative procedures, back office clinical skills, and 160 hour externship in area medical offices. Front office procedures, including appointment scheduling, insurance billing and collections. Office management skills are taught on state-of-the-art computer software. Back office clinical skills include vital signs, diagnostic testing (venipuncture, urinalysis, ECG, injections, etc.), beginning pharmacology, anatomy, physiology, CPR certification, infection control, first aid and safety procedures. Six different skills’ certificates are included in course. Students who successfully complete program are eligible to take the NCCT/Medical Assistant National Certification Exam given at the adult school. Prerequisites: 18 years or older; speak, read, write English. A physical exam that incudes extensive lab work is required at the student’s expense, after registration into the program. Proof of Hepatitis B immunization also required. Physical exam form issued at time of registration.
Medical Assistant/Back Office/Evenings & Saturdays
Medical Assistant/Back Office/Evenings & Saturdays (3620) (063815):Twenty-two week evening and Saturday morning class. Prepares students to work in medical offices and clinics. Course emphasizes clinical skills including vital signs, diagnostic testing (venipuncture, urinalysis, ECG, injections, etc.). Certificates are issued in phlebotomy and injections. Students who successfully complete the course are eligible for the Medical Assistant National Certification Exam given at the adult school. Prerequisites: 18 years or older; speak, read, write English, U.S. high school diploma or GED (English version). A physical exam that incudes extensive lab work is required at the student’s expense, after registration into the program. Proof of Hepatitis B immunization also required. Physical exam form issued at time of registration. Completed exam form and proof of first Hepatitis B immunization, is due the first evening of class or the student will not be admitted into the program.
Students who successfully complete the course and Medical Assistant Front Office are eligible for the Medical Assistant National Certification Exam given at the adult school.
Medical Assistant/Electrocardiography Technician
A course for those desiring to enter the medical field or for medical personnel to increase their skills. ECG technicians are employed in doctors’ offices, clinics, hospitals. They provide critical information to physicians about patient’s heart health by preparing patients for procedures, operating machines, recording, measuring heart rates, rhythms, including arrhythmia (irregular heartbeat). Vital signs, medical terms, anatomy, physiology included. Students who successfully complete course are eligible for the ECG Technician National Certification Exam given at the adult school. Prerequisites: 18 years or older; speak, read, write English, U.S. high school diploma or GED (English version).
Medical Terminology
Medical Terminology (3182)(066415): One evening per week semester class. Learn the language of medicine applicable to all health care occupations, including basic medical word roots, combining forms, prefixes, suffixes, abbreviations, pronunciation. Course includes non-technical explanations and provides students with a working knowledge of terms used in anatomy, physiology, pathology, clinical procedures, laboratory tests. Approved for 24 continuing education hours for CNA/HHA (provider #00849). Prerequisites: speak, read, write English.
Nurse Assistant (CNA)

demand for this program, registration is through a lottery. Classroom instruction and clinical training include resident care skills, vital signs, nutrition,
emergency procedures, and rehabilitation. Eligible students take the state competency exam for certification.
Prerequisites: 18 years or older; speak, read, write English at US high school level. A physical exam is required, at the student’s expense, after
registration into the program. Valid, current photo ID in one of the following forms: driver’s license or state ID card; passport (U.S. or foreign); U.S.
Military I.D. card; Alien Registration card. Social Security card also required. The names must match on these documents, and they must be the originals.
A current American Heart Assoc. CPR for Health Care Provider, or American Red Cross CPR for the Professional Responder is required before students
go to clinical.
Persons who have been convicted at any time of a felony or misdemeanor (other than a traffic violation) should not register until they have obtained a criminal conviction clearance. Call Allied Health Counselor Gloria Hasson at (805) 579-6232 for information and instructions.
Physical Therapy Aide
Program provides the instruction and skills necessary for students to become physical therapy aides or chiropractic assistants. Coursework includes fundamental
principles of anatomy, physiology, psychology, medical terminology, therapeutic exercise, and modalities with a heavy emphasis on the musculoskeletal system. Additional topics include basic massage and front office skills. Students will be required to spend some class time observing in various physical therapy or chiropractic settings as an introduction to the field.
Pharmacy Technician
Class meets State Board requirements for Registered Pharmacy Technician. Study basic principles of pharmacology, pharmaceutical calculations, medical terminology, functions and duties of a pharmacy technician in both a retail and hospital pharmacy. Course includes hands-on training and experience in making I.V. solutions, piggybacks, aseptic techniques, re-packaging of pharmaceuticals. A computer lab is utilized by students to input outpatient/inpatient data. Preparation for national certification exam is included. Prerequisites: 18 years or older; U.S. high school graduate or GED (English version) Students must show proof of graduation or GED by first class meeting, pre-algebra math skills; speak, read, write English, 9th grade reading level recommended.
Phlebotomy Program (Basic and Advanced)
California Department of Health Services, Division of Laboratory Science, approved program to train students to work in laboratories, doctors’ offices, and other health care facilities.
Students must be on time and attend all classes. Students must successfully complete the on-campus Basic Phlebotomy to be permitted to attend the Advanced Phlebotomy portion of the program, then proceed to a two consecutive week unpaid
externship. Students successfully completing the Phlebotomy Program (basic, advanced, and externship), receive completion certificates. To complete the certification process, students apply for State Licensing. Students should be aware that blood withdrawal techniques are practiced on classmates throughout this course.
Interested individuals must meet the following pre-requisites: 18 years or older, Speak, read, write English, 9th grade reading level highly recommended.
Once enrolled in the course, students must provide the following documentation PRIOR to the first day of class: Proof of high school graduation (from a U.S. high school) through transcripts or GED (English version). A physical exam, including Hepatitis B immunization series.
Note: Selection into the following three programs is based upon a point system. Applicants earn points from three areas: a basic skills test (reading comprehension, math and language skills), an interview and an essay. Applicants must achieve a minimum percentage of the overall points in order to be considered as an alternate. Applicants achieving less than the required minimum overall points are ineligible for this program year. The number of students accepted and the minimum point percentage vary for each program. Respiratory Therapist
Respiratory Therapist (3336)(064512): Nationally accredited by CoARC and CAAHEP. 22 month (Respiratory Therapist core-portion only) program.
Prerequisites (completion of prerequisites is not necessary to begin application process): 18 years or older; U.S. high school diploma, G.E.D. (English version) or U.S. college degree. See program selection process note above.
State law requires all applicants for California Licensure to have a minimum of an associate’s degree. The degree must be issued by either the respiratory therapy school or by a college with whom the school has formed a consortium. Simi Valley Career Institute has an agreement with Excelsior College to grant an associate’s degree to those individuals who successfully complete the program, pending completion of 18 additional college units. The Simi Valley Adult School Respiratory Therapy program has been approved for 62 college credits by the American Council on Education (ACE) College Credit Recommendation Service. These college credits may be applied towards an associate’s or bachelor’s degree at one of the many colleges or universities that accept ACE recommended courses. Surgical Technologist
Surgical Technologist (3335)(065012): Twelve-month nationally accredited program.
Prerequisites: (Completion of prerequisites is not necessary to begin application process) 18 years or older; U.S. high school diploma, G.E.D. (English version) or U.S. college degree.
Program prepares students to function within the sterile environment of the operating room assisting physicians during surgical procedures. The surgical technology field requires physical stamina, manual dexterity, the ability to maintain good working relationships with patience and tact, and the ability to work well in high-stress situations. Intensive study program includes anatomy, physiology, medical terminology, microbiology, pharmacology, principles of aseptic and universal precaution techniques, surgical procedures, patient care and clinical experience in area hospitals. Students begin clinical rotations in April. Employment opportunities include acute care hospitals, outpatient surgery centers and physician’s offices. X-ray Technician
X-Ray Technician (3253)(066012): Eleven-month state accredited program.
Prerequisites: (Completion of prerequisites is not necessary to begin application process) 18 years or older; U.S. high school diploma, G.E.D. (English version) or U.S. college degree.
Limited permit program prepares students to take California State Board Radiology Examination in categories of chest, torsoskeletal and extremities. Program includes a medical assistant back-office component. Graduates work primarily in doctors’ offices, clinics and medical groups and may continue at another school to advance to the full license. Clinical rotations begin in January at sites designated by program director. A physical exam that includes extensive lab work is required, at the student’s expense, after acceptance into the program.
